Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam or Art in A Bathtub

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is a leading Modern Art Museum. Priceless art in a modern building – that’s what to expect when you visit Het Stedelijk Museum. The museum is home to modern works of art and includes artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Newman, Rauschenberg. Malevich and Warhol. The recently added new wing is a wonder in itself and looks like a bathtub.

The Bathtub

Originally the museum was housed in a mansion with a neo-renaissance façade adorned with sculptures. This building needed a facelift; extra exhibition space and a new restaurant. The new wing borders on the old museum and is commonly nicknamed; the bathtub – a perfect description, albeit a bathtub without legs.

A Journey through Modern Art

The collection of het Stedelijk Museum contains 90,000 works of art, the oldest dating back to 1870. Its broad collection includes paintings, sculptures, photography, film and applied arts. Major styles are represented – Bauhaus, De Stijl, De Amsterdamse School, CoBrA, pop art and minimal art.

Karel Appel

Be sure to visit the mural by Karel Appel which used to embellish the wall in the café. This colourful mural depicts a crested bird, a flower and a human being seemingly dancing across a white wall. A blue door is part of the composition. It is a real door and is used as a door.

Gerrit Rietveld

Gerrit Rietveld’s Rood-Blauwe Stoel – Red and Blue Chair is typical of De Stijl Movement. When placed against a black background the chair almost seems to disappear and gives the impression of being afloat. His zigzag chairs look funny and will make you wonder if they are comfortable to sit on.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol needs no recommendation all his works are interesting. He is the king of visual art and pop art. Het Stedelijk Museum exhibits quite a number of his works.

Kazimir Malevich

Kazimir Malevich needs no praise for serious modern art lovers. Malevich is the master of geometric and abstract art. Het Stedelijk Museum is the owner of 24 of his paintings, more than any other museum outside Russia. Probably his best known work is Black Square, exhibited in The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
