Restaurant De Portugees Portugal in Amsterdam
Are you homesick for Portugal, the beaches, the beautiful cities, the sun, the sea but especially the delicious food? Restaurant De Portugees’, an slice of Portugal in the middle of Amsterdam serving authentic Portuguese food and the best Bacalhau à Brás ever. This is stockfish (dried cod) and prepared according to the recipe of Mr. Brás who served this dish to his guests in his tavern in Bairro Alto in Lisbon.
Restaurant de Portugees
The restaurant has a cozy feel with beautiful wall tiles in white and cobalt blue and brown wooden tables for an intimate dinner, but also suitable for larger groups. Part of the restaurant can be reached via a staircase to a vide.
Portuguese Menu only Portuguese Dishes
The menu includes a large number of Portuguese starters, main courses and desserts. Highly recommended is gambas com alho, fried large shrimps with garlic and white wine sauce. This starter is prepared with just the right amount of garlic to preserve the flavour of the shrimp. It is difficult to choose from the main course selection because they all sound equally tasty. Fresh sardines are so much tastier than these from a can, the leg of lamb is so tender that it almost falls off the bone, but the most authentic dish is Bacalhau à Brás. You should definitely taste this!
Bacalhau, typically Portuguese
The favourite Portuguese dish by far is Bacalhau, dried, salted cod or stockfish. Thin strips of fish in creamy scrambled eggs with batatas fritas caseiras, black olives and very thinly sliced salty potato strings. The desserts are unbelievably delicious. Pastéis de Belém is a lukewarm dessert. The recipe is a well-kept secret. Be sure to savour Burmester Port: an excellent company to the Pastéis.
Trivia
Pastéis de Belém is a specialty from Belém, now a district of Lisbon. They were first made and sold in 1837 when Belém was still a village outside the city. Everyone loved them and they quickly became one of Portugal’s most popular treats. They are eaten lukewarm and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.
