In Amsterdam you drink coffee in a coffee bar or café. Coffeeshops have a completely different function. As the Dutch are in the top five of coffee drinking nations, coffee bars are ubiquitous in Amsterdam. If you have asked for ‘koffie’ you are most likely to get black coffee with sugar and coffee cream, along with a biscuit. Dutch cafés also serve cappuccino, espresso and other Italian-style coffees. In fact, the Dutch are very fond of their morning or after dinner coffee.
Coffee with a wedge of apple pie is so typically Dutch that foreigners often think there are no other pastries. Drink your cappuccino, espresso or latte at one of the many café terraces with canal view. Soak up the sun, chat with your neighbour or indulge in people watching.
